VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

A large part of the cost of a phone line is the last-mile delivery. Conventional phone lines and T1 circuits require dedicated wiring which is costly to deploy and maintain. VoIP changes that by using the public Internet network which is already available at customer premises for last-mile delivery. This represents substantial savings that competitive carriers readily share with their clients and thus making VoIP the most economical way to deliver phone service.

Such great savings come at the cost of reduced reliability and sometimes reduced voice quality since VoIP is entirely dependant on the public Internet’s reliability.

Besides savings and reduced reliability and quality, VoIP offers unmatched advantages over conventional phone lines:

  • Ability to “move” lines to a new location by simply moving phone equipment
  • Ability to add lines without a technician visit
  • Ability to use multiple Caller-IDs on a per-call basis (much like ISDN)

VoIP is in the process of changing the phone line delivery landscape but there’s a time and a place for everything. VoIP is not the answer to all questions but it does answer many.
